Welsh National Theatre Literary Policy
Welsh National Theatre commissions plays by Welsh, Wales-based or Welsh-educated writers and is a home for established writers to work at scale - commissions are through invitation only. We cannot accept unsolicited scripts but through our Culture Scouts, we aim to a see a selection of new work across the country.
If you have a play or reading that you would like to invite a WNT representative to, please complete the ‘See My Work’ submission section on this page https://www.welshnationaltheatre.com/the-welsh-net. Unfortunately, we can only attend a limited number of productions, but we’ll inform you if we’re able to attend. The more notice you can give us, the better.
We will run occasional open calls, which will be promoted on our website and social channels, as well as through the Writers Guild of Great Britain (WGGB) to their membership.
Full terms and conditions will be published at the time of announcement, but we will only ask you for an extract, and not a full script. We anticipate a high number of submissions and recognise that similarities of subject matter often occur. WNT is unable to accept liability and/or compensatation to any writer if material similar to yours, received coincidentally from another source, is subsequently commissioned or produced.
If you are at the start of your writing journey, we encourage you to build relationships with as many theatre companies as you can to develop your skills. The following companies in Wales accept unsolicited scripts and offer feedback, advice and training to emerging writers and creatives in Wales:
Sherman Theatre https://www.shermantheatre.co.uk/theatre-makers/
Theatr Clwyd https://www.theatrclwyd.com/take-part/artists
We also encourage you to engage with the WGGB, the trade union for playwrights in Wales, who can provide contract vetting, support and advice, a weekly e-bulletin, member discounts, member events (including free screenings) and more, see https://writersguild.org.uk.
